Inside self-checkout: Intermarché and AI-powered shrink reduction

In a six-month trial at Intermarché, discreet overhead cameras running Smart Vision, powered by SeeChange, reduced shrink at the self-checkouts while easing the load on staff. The system watches the scanning area in real time and recognizes the moments that lead to loss – an item passed without scanning, a product left in the basket, then prompts the shopper rather than accusing them. Most people simply correct the mistake themselves, and staff can review any flagged moment on a handheld device to resolve honest errors with the customer. The result was a calmer, smoother checkout where the team spent less time monitoring shoppers and more time supporting them. As Laurent Hugou, President of Stime, Intermarché’s IT subsidiary, put it, they’re now more involved in customer support than in surveillance.
